I recently went to Chicago for my third year of Internet Retailer Conference and Exhibition. While 92 West is not an internet retailer, we do have clients that sell online and want to be able to give them the most knowledgeable social media service we can offer. IRCE is a great place to get the right information for your internet retailer clients.

I won’t be able to touch on every point in this one blog, but here are some of my favorite takeaways from IRCE 2016.

  • Content – Should be well thought out and always choose quality over quantity. Also, disperse it to the right community specific on the different channels it’s going out from.
  • Connect – Don’t just throw your well-thought-out content randomly. We can’t throw our message out to the masses blindly anymore.
  • Current – Always be on the watch for events coming up. Try to get in front of big events so that you associate your brand with timely interaction.

It all comes down to strategy and planning.  You have to be mindful of these three things in order to get the results you’re looking for. And while these may seem like common sense, you’d be surprised at how many brands still haven’t succeeded at utilizing them properly.

Here are some of the brands that are doing it right:

  • Carhartt –  I’ve liked this brand for some time, and they recently updated their website to really incorporate some of the concepts I mentioned above.
  • Zazzle – Definitely staying current and staying ahead of new events. While at IRCE this brand had a great session on going “viral” that showcased how you can use a mix of timely content and the right acceleration!
  • Yankee Candle – I love candles, and this  brand is my favorite! I find their Instagram feed to be pretty strong as far as well thought out content.

Having seen these and knowing a little more about brands that are doing it right, where does your brand fall? Are you connecting with your audience with content that’s current and consumable?

Now go forth and do better!
